 The next USA by the Bay Speaker Series event will be held Thursday, Oct. 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the USA Baldwin County Campus in FairhopeDr. Philip J. Carr, USA Chief Calvin McGhee Professor of Native American Studies and Professor of Anthropology, will present a free lecture titled "Archaeological Studies on the Gulf Coast," and a reception will follow. Seating is limited, so register today at SouthAlabama.edu/SpeakerSeries. 


Carr will discuss the work of the USA Center for Archaeological Studies, as highlighted in the new book "Southern Footprints: Exploring Gulf Coast Archaeology," including the ongoing I-10 Mobile River Bridge Project. From 2021 to 2023, Carr's team excavated 15 sites along the proposed bridge route, uncovering artifacts from 2,000-year-old Native American pottery to colonial settlements and 1960s construction of I-10.

As a transdisciplinary scholar, Carr’s research explores Native American history, archaeology and education. Carr's research publications span the entirety of history, as he investigates the human past to inform the present in hopes of building a better future. His current research focus is the people of Mobile Bay.
